How to Use Our Porcelain Tile Drill Bits

These diamond core bits must be kept cool while drilling. This means constant application of the water coolant throughout the drilling operation. Allowing the bit to heat will reduce useful life and can completely destroy it.

The key to successful drilling is to maintain a light pressure and high revolutions, a drill speed of 1500-2500 rpm is recommended. A hand held battery drill is ideal rather than a mains operated machine. Firstly because it is much more manoeuverable and secondly for safety - you will be using a water spay after all.

Starting the Hole

A core bit does not have a point as a normal drill. The hole can be started in two very simple ways.

  • Offer the bit at a forty five degree angle to the tile to score the tile. Then change the position to ninety degrees and continue.
  • Make a simple template with and old credit card or plywood. Simply cut a v shape in the edge of the template. Hold the template in place and offer the bit to the 'V' and start drilling. Once the tile is scored remove the template and spray continously with water.

Suggested Method 1 (tile horizontal)

Using a wter dam to drill porcelain tilesMake a water dam with plumbers putty or similar, fill the dam with water and drill. Make sure that the dam remains full of water and does not leak.

Suggested Method 2 (tile vertical)

Using a water spray to keep drill bits coolConstantly spray the bit with water. A variety of methods can be used, the simplest is by using a product spray bottle which are very common in every supermarket. A more elegant solution could be to use a pressurized container similar to that use for garden products.
